Background

In March 2024, Canterbury City Council, in partnership with the LTA Tennis Foundation, embarked on a significant renovation project at the West Beach Tennis Courts in Whitstable, Kent, as part of their ongoing initiative to improve local sports infrastructure and enhance recreational spaces for the community. Situated in a scenic coastal location, the courts were resurfaced to an extremely high spec, alongside the installation of high quality nets and repainted lines. To match the upgraded look and performance of the courts, a new perimeter fencing solution was required. The court fencing was essential for ensuring security, protecting spectators and passers-by from stray balls, and improving ball retention for players. Additionally, it was designed for long-lasting durability while seamlessly complementing the surrounding environment.

The council sought a trusted partner capable of providing a high quality, robust fencing solution to meet these needs, ensuring the new fencing would withstand the elements, offer a clear boundary for players, and contribute positively to the visual appeal of the area. Jacksons Fencing was selected for its reputation in delivering premium, long-lasting sports fencing systems tailored to specific project requirements.

The Challenge

The key challenges for the fencing were multi-faceted. First, security was a priority. The courts needed to be securely enclosed to prevent unauthorised access and vandalism, yet the boundary needed to remain welcoming and accessible to the public. Durability was another major consideration, especially given the coastal environment, where salty sea air and strong winds could quickly degrade materials that weren’t up to standard. The fencing had to withstand harsh weather conditions while maintaining its integrity and appearance over time.

Visibility and safety also had to be considered. The fencing needed to provide a clear boundary while ensuring that players' views of the court and the picturesque surrounding landscape weren’t obstructed. Additionally, the design needed to be aesthetically pleasing and complement the beachside location, offering a modern, sleek appearance without detracting from the natural beauty of the area. The existing chain link fencing – traditionally used for tennis courts – had fallen into disrepair and needed replacing with something smarter and more durable.

Solution

Jacksons Fencing supplied and installed its EuroGuard® Rebound sports mesh fencing, a high-performance solution specifically designed for sports facilities like tennis courts. The EuroGuard Rebound mesh fencing system is ideal for environments that require durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, making it a perfect choice for modern tennis courts.

The sports mesh fencing system is constructed from galvanised steel mesh and was finished in this installation with our marine grade polyester powder coating in green RAL 6005 to providing an added layer of protection. The specialised powder-coated finish is ideal for coastal locations to help prevent corrosion, ensuring the fence remains strong and visually appealing despite exposure to sea air. The system’s design is specifically engineered for sports use, with a mesh configuration that allows for optimal ball rebound. This is particularly important for tennis, where the ball needs to bounce off the fence with minimal disruption to play.

A key advantage of EuroGuard Rebound sports mesh fencing is its visibility. The mesh structure provides a clear boundary without views of the surrounding environment, contributing to both safety and aesthetics. Moreover, the design ensures that the fencing does not pose any risk of injury, as there are no sharp edges or hazardous protrusions. This makes it an ideal choice for a public sports facility where safety is paramount.

The low-maintenance nature of the EuroGuard Rebound fencing system was also a significant benefit. The materials are designed to require minimal upkeep and deliver a low lifetime cost, which is especially important for public facilities like tennis courts, where the focus is on providing a quality sporting experience.

The installation process was managed by Jacksons Fencing’s expert team, who ensured that the project was completed efficiently and within the planned timeframe. Despite the challenges posed by the coastal location, including the high winds and salty air, the installation proceeded smoothly. The team meticulously measured the perimeter of the courts, ensuring that the posts were securely anchored into the ground to withstand the coastal conditions. The panels were then attached to posts with our vandal-resistant mesh security clips and tamper-proof fixings on the secure side to reduce the risk of vandalism.

The installation of the EuroGuard Rebound sports mesh fencing at the West Beach Tennis Courts marks a significant milestone in the enhancement of Whitstable’s recreational facilities. By choosing Jacksons Fencing for this project, Canterbury City Council has successfully created a modern, secure, and durable tennis facility that will serve the community for many years to come.
