Challenge
The key challenge was to design, supply and install bespoke Penshurst metal railings to secure an elevated pathway within a new housing development.
Millbrook Park in Mill Hill, London represents an impressive development of 2,174 high quality apartments / houses located in a beautifully landscaped park setting that boasts panoramic views across North London.
The site includes a long meandering pathway, with a gabion retaining wall to one side, beyond which lies a sheer drop of several metres before reaching the idyllic garden scenery created on the lower level.
The gabion wall and dramatic downward slope presented a significant safety issue that needed to be addressed, requiring the fence posts to be set back from the edge. In addition the entire line of fencing needed to be stepped to accommodate the undulating contours of the footpath.
Solution
The 88 metre fence line comprised 1100mm high Penshurst Railings with over length posts positioned 1200mm back from the edge to allow a deep, secure footing and clearance of the gabion walls. The railings were set with posts at varying centres throughout the entire run to cater for the natural changes in direction dictated by the path. Curved sections of the walkway featured straight panels between stepped posts.
The end result represents an aesthetically attractive footpath in keeping with the quality image projected by the development which allows residents to safely enjoy the breathtaking vista.
