Challenge
The Junior King’s School was founded in 1879 as the preparatory school to the prestigious King’s School, Canterbury. In 1929 the school moved to Milner Court, a 16th century manor house located in a quiet countryside area in Sturry, only two miles out of Canterbury city centre. Pupils’ ages range between 3 to 13 years old, numbering some 400 day pupils, with provision for 70 boarders.
This year the school’s Security Manager, John Armitage decided to restrict vehicle access after school hours. This would entail installing timber fencing around part of the site adjacent to the drives leading into and out of the main school building area, and the installation of automated timber driveway gates at the entry and exit points. These automatic gates would only be operated by the use of a remote key fob, thus restricting any unauthorised vehicles entering after school hours.
Solution
After contacting several companies John chose Jacksons Fencing to supply and install the fencing and automatic gates. He explained, “Jacksons has a very good reputation, I now understand why this is so. Right from the initial site visit by their contracts manager, Robert Smith, things ran so smoothly. Robert took on board the requirements for the job and detailed the necessary products and installation works to be done. “It wasn’t a simple task, as this required liaising between several teams, not just for installation, but for the automation for the gates as well. I was very impressed, the various teams always arrived on time, they completed the work just as promptly, were polite and courteous and always left the site tidy. I have to say this hasn’t been my experience of working with other companies. The other reason for choosing Jacksons is the 25 year guarantee on their products, both timber and metal, this is also something I haven’t had from other suppliers either. It makes sense when carrying out works on an impressive site like this that the products used are good quality, they are sympathetic to the ‘history’ of the place and they stay looking good for a long time. Jacksons definitely ticked all the boxes.”
The work at the school was carried out in April 2011 and was completed in the time scale allowed. Jacksons' installation team started work to install the post and rail fencing and the gates. Then automation was installed, fitted, tested and commissioned. The automation included fitting ram operators to the swing gates, including flashing safety lights, safety photocells, safety edges and magnetic locking. Timed entry ground loops were also fitted on both the entry gate and exit gate. The works were scheduled to coincide with the school’s Easter break, which Jacksons will endeavour to organise for any school works, given enough prior notice, as it is safer and more convenient to do works when pupils are not on site.
