Background
Cala at Finchwood Park is set within 140 acres of green surroundings, just north of Finchampstead; named Berkshire’s top 10 places to live. With plenty of paths, eco-friendly play and leisure areas, there is much to attract new home buyers to this area. In addition, there are many friendly local pubs, as well as a wide range of sports, leisure, and social clubs nearby.
Finchwood Park is in a prime location for education, with three schools and a nursery in close proximity. Travel connections are also excellent, with two mainline stations within four miles, both with services to London. The M3 and M4 are both around 8 miles away, providing easy access to London, the South, and the West, but still keeping the development quiet and secluded.
A number of houses within the development are part of the ‘Enhanced Energy’ collection, with features including solar panels, underfloor heating, air source heat pumps, low energy lighting, electric vehicle charging points, and recycled materials used throughout. These homes align with Cala’s 2020 Sustainability Strategy which aims to achieve net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions across the business and net-zero carbon enabled homes by 2030.
The Finchwood Park development also carries with it an urban wildlife strategy; introducing measures to support and protect wildlife on the site including birds, bats, bees, and hedgehogs.
In addition to the 256 new homes, Cala Homes was responsible for creating landscaped community areas including sports facilities, allotments, a nine mile long cycle path, a green corridor and LEAP, LAP, and NEAP playground areas.
Solution
To provide safe demarcation around the play areas, this picturesque, sustainability focused development needed a play area fencing solution to align with its vision and values.
Our timber RoSPA play area fencing was chosen to surround the play area. Although not a legal requirement, our RoSPA play area fencing was audited in 2006 to certify it meets the standards set by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Designed to maximise the safety of children’s play areas, including the fencing and gates around it, the standard sets out requirements for the design and installation of products used in a play area.
The fencing and gates must help prevent children from leaving the safe perimeter of the play area while enabling independent play, as well as stopping unleashed dogs or other animals from entering. The design of RoSPA play area fencing should have no sharp edges, gaps, or points where children could become trapped. With its chunky, planed timber pales, Timber Playtime® provides a child-friendly, natural appearance which blends into the green surroundings, while minimising the risk of cuts and splinters from its smooth edges. Our wooden Playtime® fencing is often used in areas where aesthetics is important, or the location restricts the use of a metal playground railing.
Often timber fences are avoided in public play areas due to the risk of vandalism but our RoSPA playground fencing features an anti-trap design with timber pales sandwiched between rails, creating a robust fence that reduces the risk of vandalism.
Matching self-closing play area gates were installed to provide safe entry and exit points, highlighted in green polyester powder coated steel posts for easy identification and durability.
Our 25 year guarantee against rot and insect attack was provided with all the fencing and gates.
