Background

Originally opened in 1852 by the Church of England for the training of women teachers, Hockerill Anglo-European College is a co-educational boarding school for around 950 students aged 11-18.

A key area of focus for the college is environment; and that students will be inspired by the college’s environment for learning.

At the college campus in Bishop’s Stortford, there are five boarding houses, providing high quality accommodation for students. House common rooms provide comfortable, modern living spaces for socialising and relaxing, with plenty of entertainment resources. In addition, houses have their own private gardens where games and events are held in the summer.

The college has its own health centre, with three registered nurses, and includes a fully equipped medical treatment room, a day room, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Around the medical centre and one of the boarding houses, secure fencing which optimised privacy was required.

Solution

Installing security fencing around boarding houses and medical centres within boarding schools or college campuses must be well thought out. While maintaining security is paramount, the approach must also respect the aesthetic environment of the campus, as well as the need for accessibility and privacy for students, staff, and visitors.

80m of our EuroGuard Combi fencing, which has a unique design consisting of strong and secure V mesh panels combined with timber privacy fencing slats, was installed to improve security and protect gardens and views to ground floor windows. The mesh fencing system creates a secure perimeter, while the timber privacy fencing slats provide concealment with a natural appearance which grants a pleasant environment in the gardens.

Installing college security fencing

To ensure the right type of college security fencing is specified, conduct a detailed risk assessment to identify specific security concerns, such as unauthorised access, potential intrusions, or privacy concerns. Fencing should clearly mark the boundary of the building being protected, preventing unauthorised entry without creating a fortress-like atmosphere. Choose fencing that acts as a visible deterrent while blending with the existing campus architecture, ensuring it doesn’t appear overly aggressive or restrictive.

Installations should comply with safeguarding standards for children and young people, as well as health and safety legislation. This includes designing fences that prevent accidental harm to students, avoiding sharp edges or risky designs.

Around boarding houses, fencing should generally be at least 2-3 metres tall and have an anti-climb design, but not be so high as to feel oppressive. It can be combined with planting to provide a natural backdrop. Avoid the use of spiked toppings which can create hostile environments. Focus on the fixings used within the fence. Unsupervised young people may find it fun to attempt to undo bolts and screws, leaving the fencing unsecure, so prioritise tamper-proof or concealed fixings.

Ensure all entry and exit points are secured with safe gates. Emergency egress routes should comply with fire safety regulations and remain accessible, particularly around medical centres.

Choose materials and designs that complement the school’s existing architecture. For instance, a heritage boarding school may require wrought-iron style railings that blend with historical buildings, while a more modern campus may opt for contemporary designs like EuroGuard Combi.

Acoustic fencing is also a popular fencing choice for college campuses and boarding schools as it provides noise reduction alongside a natural timber aesthetic, privacy, and a secure, anti-climb barrier.

By combining security with sensitivity to the campus environment, schools and colleges can effectively protect their boarding houses and medical centres without compromising the overall experience of the community.
