Background

As well as being an integral part of the water system, Farmoor reservoir in Oxfordshire is also a unique habitat for wildlife, and a popular destination for anglers and sailors. The reservoir is the largest single area of open water in the county, and is owned and administered by a long-standing customer of Jacksons Fencing. Located about 5 miles from the city of Oxford and like most of the reservoirs in the Thames Valley, it was not formed by damming a valley.

The three nature reserves attract many visitors each year for countryside walks, sailing, fishing, and birdwatching, and the site also houses a waterside café. Parking facilities are also available at the site, so to stop unwanted vehicles and camping as well as enforcing a parking charge which helps maintain the area, car park barriers were required.

Solution

We designed and installed a barrier controlled paid car parking system that allows visitors to pay at a machine within the car park and then allows the vehicle to exit the site when the parking has been paid.

When a vehicle enters the site, the barrier, with a boom width of 3.6m, rises, allowing vehicles to enter. This then closes once the vehicle has entered the site.

After visitors have enjoyed the reservoir, they pay at the machine which we supplied. The machine allows both cash or card payments for convenience and is simple and easy to understand, catering for all visitors. There is also an intercom fitted on the system that can call a remote help centre if any assistance is required.

Once paid, the machine dispenses a card that is then used to exit the site and forms a receipt for the visitor.

The solution has been in place for over a year and the customer is more than happy with the reliability and the problems that the solution resolves.

At Jacksons Fencing, we pride ourselves on providing safe, secure solutions that are reliable and also sustainable. We have been automating gates, barriers and proving automated access systems as part of our solutions since 1991 and have a large team of automation experts and engineers that are all DHF certified to a minimum of level 2. In addition to installing automated gates and barriers, we can provide gate automation maintenance, servicing, and our automated products even come with a 25 month automation guarantee (subject to a servicing contract being taken out in the second year).

Various traffic barriers are commonly used for remote or rural car parks. We have provided many parking barrier solutions for tourist destinations, with some examples below.
