Background

Set within the 450-acre Mote Park in Maidstone, a brand new adventure playground complete with a sky trail, climbing wall, segways and mini golf has opened as part of a £4.3 million investment by Maidstone Borough Council.

Over the next three years, they have committed to the redevelopment of Mote Park, with the addition of a visitor centre, venue hire, cafe, toilets and baby changing facilities.

As a result of the developments since the 2012 lottery bid, visitor numbers have increased to over 1.5 million per year.

Maidstone Borough Council’s leisure manager stated that adding the new attractions and facilities ‘gives everyone that comes here more to do, and fill their whole day rather than just a short visit’.

There are key considerations when it comes to leisure attractions with security being one of the top priorities. The investment that goes into developments like these often comes from limited resources, so protection of assets and buildings is essential.

The strength and appearance of the boundary also play a part, as they can indicate the safety of the equipment inside, offering peace of mind to onlooking parents and guardians. At the same time, the fence should offer good visibility, and blend into the surrounding environment to provide a clear view for watchful bystanders.

With expensive apparatus that should only be used under supervision inside, the zone should be completely secure and free from the risk of unauthorised access, vandalism and injury when the activity area is closed.

Solution

As well as creating a safe perimeter for the children’s play area at Mote Park, Jacksons Fencing was specified to supply fencing for the new adventure play zone.

We supplied 120 metres of 2.4m high Securi-Mesh® fencing to create a safe and secure perimeter for the adventure playground, with 1 matching single leaf gate, and a pair of matching double leaf gates that can allow emergency access.

Securi-Mesh® has small apertures and welds at each intersection, making it climb resistant, however the mesh profile still conforms to building regulations for anti-trap and offers good vision through the fence, making it ideal for use with CCTV and helping to deter criminal activity. The see-through mesh also means children can participate independently from their parents, who can observe from a distance.

The mesh panels and gates are Galfan® zinc alloy coated to BS EN 10244-2 class A, and were supplied with a protective polyester powder coating finish in green RAL 3005, which matches the fencing of the children’s play area, and also blends in with the natural surroundings of the park.

All our fencing and gates come with a 25 year guarantee, so visitors will be able to enjoy the adventure playground for years to come.
